Tattoo News - August/September 2007

NEWS
An article on the recent tragic plane crash off Tahiti is online at http://www.corazontattoo.ch/

ON THE WEB
Every few months I do an internet search for good tattoo links to include in this newsletter & I am usually appalled by how much bad information there is out there-- particularly re. motif meaning.

I did find a few excellent sites featuring quality tattoo work with good photos for inspiration. http://www.calypsotattoo.com/tattoos/ I have previously included in my newsletters, but it is worth repeating as there are always new photos being added. Also see http://www.robdeut.com/ and http://www.corazontattoo.ch/

The De Young Museum hosted a recent symposium on the art of Papua New Guinea. Video of the symposium, and some fascinating pod casts are online at http://www.famsf.org/deyoung/collections/collection.asp?collectionkey=190

I was unaware until recently that a wonderful article on our friends, the Hoe family, appeared in the Star Bulletin. It portrays a family that has found the balance between traditional values and life on O'ahu
today. See http://starbulletin.com/2001/09/09/special/generations/story6.html

NEW TATTOO TECHNOLOGY
There is a new type of pigment designed in such a way that it can easily be removed with only one laser treatment. CNN has a good article, which includes comments from the tattoo community at
http://www.cnn.com/2007/LIVING/personal/07/19/combustable.tattoos.ap/index.html

IN THE ISLANDS
Every 4 years the South Pacific Commission coordinates an arts festival that is beyond compare. And every 4 years the festival is held in a different Pacific country. In 2008 the festival will be held in American Samoa from July 20th - August 2nd. It truly is an incredible experience! http://www.festival-pacific-arts.org/Festival.htm

BOOKS
The current issue of Hawai'i Magazine has a nice review of my book, Tattoo Traditions of Hawai'i, as well as a brief interview. Hawai'i Magazine is available at most Borders and Barnes & Noble stores. The book, now in it's second printing, is available for purchase ($18.95 + shipping) on my website, http://www.tattootraditions.alohaworld.com/tattootraditions/book.htm
