September 24 & 25 was the 11th annual San Diego Pacific Islander Cultural Festival. This years event was exciting, as we were treated to a demonstration of traditional Samoan tattooing by Tufunga Aisea Toetu'u and Uili Tasi.
Aisea Toetu'u is in California through the end of October and has a limited number of appointments available for those serious about experiencing a traditional tattoo with bone tools. Aisea can be reached at (808) 330-5612.

In a small New Zealand town called Nelson on the northern tip of the South Island there is an annual Wearable Art Competition. This started in the '80's as a very small event and has really taken off. Held every September, the event has grown beyond belief. There is now a multi-million dollar permanent facility to display the collection as well as provide storage & studio space. If you can't check out the museum, at least check out their website.
