Tattoo News - June 2003
The big tattoo news is that the first Tongan tattoos in over 100 years have recently been completed. Samoan tufunga, Sua Suluape Petelo has now completed 4 full traditional tattoos based on the old illustration by d'Urville. The sessions all took place in Honolulu on 4 Tongan residents of Hawai'i. Among those tattooed were Rodney Powell (Ni) and Aisea Toetu'u, both are tattooists themselves. Aisea is also apprenticing in the traditional technique. Congratulations guys! If you want to see pictures and read an update, check out Ni's website in a week or two. http://tongan_tattoo.tripod.com/TonganTattoo/index.html Give him some time to get it posted. Marks of Polynesia, the Sua Sulape Petelo's site is under construction, but keep an eye on http://thelasthuman.com/SuluapeTattoo/MainMenu/mainmenu.html
Momilani's Island Traditions in Oceanside is opening a new store in Dana Point at the harbor, right across from the Catalina ferries. If you live in the area, check it out!

An article on the Tattoo Festival that took place at Taputapuatea on Raiatea in 2000 is at http://www.abc.net.au/arts/artok/bodyart/s199572.htm Also see the link on Body Art. There are some worthwhile articles & photos!
I'm constantly asked about websites for design inspiration. Try http://perso.wanadoo.fr/tahititattoo/ http://membres.lycos.fr/tatau/pages/tahitien.htm Definately check out http://membres.lycos.fr/fenuaflash/gal07.htm
Artok is a website dedicated to the arts of the Pacific that's well worth looking through. See http://www.abc.net.au/arts/artok/default.htm
TRICIA'S TATTOO SCHEDULE
June 13th through July 6th - New Zealand July 7th through 15th I am home and can respond to your e-mail or call. July 18th through July 28th - Los Angeles August 1st through August 12th - San Francisco area
As of June 14th I'll be in New Zealand and unavailable via e-mail and phone. I am using a temporary e-mail address when I'm away from home: tattootraditions@hotmail.com which I will check whenever possible, which might not be often, but I'll try.
If you are interested in an appointment, either call me immediately at home (808) 734-8677, or check out the details and sign up procedures on my website: http://tattootraditions.alohaworld.com/tattootraditions/schedule.htm The deadline to sign up for a guaranteed appointment during this CA trip is July 4th. As always, late sign-ups will be taken on a space available basis. It's probably best to sign up by mail, send your deposit on the website. You can stop by any of the California locations listed on the website to sign up in person & see samples of my work.
TO MY CA CLIENTS: Well it's finally happened that I had more no-shows & cancellations than tattoos, so there are a few additions on my DEPOSIT POLICY link. See http://tattootraditions.alohaworld.com/tattootraditions/policy.htm In the past I've always just e-mailed the "no-show" blurb to individuals when it occured (which had been infrequent!) but here it is on the website. Also the deposit will increase to $100. as of next year. Hope that's OK with you all!
Please understand that my costs are high with hotels, rental cars & airfare.
Aloha!
Tricia
