Tattoo News - January 2006

Happy New year to you all!

ON THE WEB

A good site with a number of photos of Maori style tattoo or Kirituhi is at http://www.tattoos.co.nz/galley_maori_pacific.php

I apologize as I have so few interesting new tattoo links, but lots of links to a series of fascinating articles regarding an recent issue of major significance to both the museum/art world and to native Hawaiians. For those of you interested in the Forbes Cave repatriation issue, here's a couple of articles summarizing the events since my last report. This is from the most recent events, working back chronologically. Start at the bottom if you like, although the top three are really worth reading http://starbulletin.com/2005/12/29/editorial/commentary.html

The objects are often referred to as moepu, which specifically denotes items placed to accompany the deceased. This may not be the case, see http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2005/Dec/17/op/FP512170311.html and http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2005/Sep/25/op/op01a.html
