Tattoo News - May/June 2006
ON THE WEB
Artok has a fair number of brief articles on Pacific tattoo and body art. See http://www.abc.net.au/arts/artok/bodyart/default.htm
A good index of Pacific & New Zealand websites is at http://webdirectory.natlib.govt.nz/index.htm My friend Gotz has a site with a number of his tattoo-inspired paintings at http://gotz.blog4ever.com/blog/lesphotos-12630-9174.html I was recently on the Big Island and was given a tattoo shop's business card with one of his paintings... this is not why they are posted! Please look and be inspired, but keep it to that!
Several nice art books, including one on tattoo, are available from Livres d'Art, a Tahitian site. See http://www.tahiti1.com/livres/index.htm
A good article on Don Ed Hardy is at http://www.kqed.org/spark/artists-orgs/donedhardy.jsp
Tahitian, Marquesan and Mangarevan tattoos are discussed at http://www.tahiti1.com/en/indentity/tattoo.htm All the illustrations are Marquesan, however.
This is an old site, but worth looking at, if you haven't already. http://flatrock.org.nz/topics/odds_and_oddities/new_zealand_international_tattoo.htm
Air Tahiti's in-flight magazine has a good article on Marquesan tattoo at http://www.airtahitimagazine.com/us_version/tahiti_mag.asp?num=24&art=2
NEW TATTOO BOOKS
My book is finally out! It is a comprehensive overview of the ancient art of Hawaiian tattoo and includes a number of previously unpublished original illustrations. The contemporary revival is chronicled by statements from a number of prominent members of the Hawaiian community. At this point, we can only ship within the US-- I apologize to you overseas folks! Check out http://www.tattootraditions.alohaworld.com/tattootraditions/book.htm
Editions Haere Po No in Tahiti has finally published the French translation of excerpts from Karl von den Steinen's book on Marquesan tattoo. I have yet to find the website for online purchases, but I'm looking. If anyone else finds it, please let me know.

Saturday May 13th is the 22nd Annual May Day Festival at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton. I will have a booth and will have the book available. Christopher, my jewelry partner will also be onhand premiering our line of tattoo inspired jewelry. Come by! I'll be in the exhibition hall on the left as you enter the gate, in booth 20.
