Tattoo News - November 2011

CONVENTIONS

Here's the website for the upcoming Venezuela Body Art Exhibition & Festival organized by the Ministry of Culture: http://www.iartes.gob.ve/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=21&Itemid=24 Mokomae from Rapa Nui & I will be there, among MANY others! I'll be giving two presentations and am contributing 20+ images for a major photo exhibition that is happening in conjunction with the event.  Anybody out there in Caracas?

Henk Schiffmacher will be reopening the Amsterdam Tattoo Museum at a new location.  The gathering & festivities will take place on November 5th.  There's an amusing video of Henk describing the event on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OpQ9tj7-Ds&feature=youtu.be

ON THE WEB

A good website with tattoos from the northwestern Pacific is at http://northpacifictattoos.blogspot.com/2010/07/pohnpei.html There are some nice illustrations with cited sources (hurray!) and excerpts from James O'Connell's journals, which contain some highly amusing descriptions of the tattoo process that he underwent in the Caroline Islands. Another good site on tattoo in the western Pacific is at http://www.larskrutak.com/articles/oceania/index.html

A nice interview with Su'a Sulu'ape Petelo is online at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtsTMOL4LSo&feature=related

Te Papa Tongareva, the National Museum of New Zealand has a great video online on Samoan tattooing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IPGXPOU5-c Like everything Te Papa does, the video is extremely well done and definitely worth a watch.

I've included this link before, but it is worth keeping an eye on. Pacific Islands Report is online at http://pidp.eastwestcenter.org/pireport/graphics.htm  Check the links in the left hand column as well, esp. News and Magazines, as there's some good info here.

HOLIDAY GIFT SHOPPING

Again, Te Papa Museum does it right!  A small but beautiful selection of items is online at http://www.tepapastore.co.nz/shop_info.asp?language=maori&page=1&currency=NZD&new=Te%20Papa%20Press&productid=1007702&productname=Art%20At%20Te%20Papa-%20Available%20April Should you have problems with this link, just GOOGLE Te Papa Museum Gift Shop.  They have a number of excellent books on Maori moko (tattoo) unavailable in the US. In their SEARCH option, search both TATTOO and MOKO.

A varied selection of gift items from Aotearoa is available online at http://www.silverfernz.com. There are some very nice pieces here, but a good bit of it is quite touristy.  I was impressed with the wooden wall art: http://www.silverfernz.com/2304-set-of-5-wooden-kowhaiwhai-tile-art.htm

I'm offering a holiday special on my books, Tattoo Traditions of Hawai'i and The Polynesian Tattoo Today.  Buy both and save $3.00!  Special available on orders within the US only!  Does not apply to International orders. Payment is via PayPal.  E-mail tattoo@lava.net and you'll receive a PayPal invoice.

I also have gift certificates for tattoo credit. If you want ink, tell all your family & friends to contact me directly, or give a gift that will be remembered! (808) 734-8677 or e-mail tattoo@lava.net.  Gift certificates are available in $25. increments, payable via check or PayPal.

TRAVEL AND TATTOO SCHEDULE

For the most part, I will largely be home for the next few months.  I just made my 100th tattoo trip to California & am going to take a couple of months break.  The next trip will be after the first of the new year.  Stay posted here in my newsletters and on my website—most likely I'll be announcing the next CA trip dates in my December or January newsletter. I will be in Venezuela briefly (see above) and have a possible trip to Mexico City in the works, but otherwise I am available on O'ahu

Aloha,
