Tattoo News - January 2014 HAPPY NEW YEAR!

IN THE ISLANDS

If you are on Maui, there are a number of events scheduled at the Schaefer International Gallery at the MACC highlighting kapa, or Hawaiian tapa (barkcloth) making.  See http://mauiarts.org/index.html?p=3&Year=2014&pp=arc

O'ahu folks, Makahiki season always promises a lot of fun outdoor events, especially for keiki and family.  Kamakau Charter School's annual event is coming up Jan 11th at Turtle Bay and is always a good time: http://www.turtlebayresort.com/oahu_events/makahiki_kuilima/

One again, I'll be teaching the Polynesian Tattoo History course at Windward Community College. There is no actual tattooing that occurs, rather we look at the history and cultural context of tattooing throughout Polynesia.  The course is open to anyone. Tuition is approx. $340.  For details on the course, see http://windward.hawaii.edu/Courses/HWST273/ Info on registering is at http://windward.hawaii.edu/Admissions_Records/  There are only 5 seats left, so register SOON!

ONLINE

Photographer Jens Parkitny has travelled extensively through the Chin villages documenting the last remaining examples of facial tattoos. There's several exhibitions of his work scheduled in various museums & galleries.  Check out:  http://www.bloodfaces.com/

A Maori woman was recently denied access to a bathhouse in Japan because of her moko kauae (Maori chin tattoo). The story is online at http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11125046

BOOKS

A new book on traditional tattooing, Drawing with Great Needles: Ancient Tattoo Traditions of North America is available from the University of Texas Press. See http://utpress.utexas.edu/index.php/books/detdra

I'm offering a discounted price if you purchase both my books, The Polynesian Tattoo Today and Tattoo Traditions of Hawai'i through the month of January, within the U.S.  Order both books with Priority Mail shipping for just $45. (domestic orders only). This is a savings of approximately $10!  Please e-mail me at tattoo@lava.net and I will generate a PayPal invoice with the discounted shipping. Sorry folks, if you are outside the US, International shipping rates apply which are significantly more expensive.

TRAVEL AND TATTOO SCHEDULE:

I am home on Oʻahu until mid-May. In May I'll be heading first to the SOUTH SF AREA, then SACRAMENTO, followed by LONG BEACH, Perhaps NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY if there are enough clients signed up in all areas.

The deadline for the next mainland trip is April 1st  but as always, the sooner you sign up, the better, as it allows us more time to communicate & work on your art and gives you higher priority in scheduling.  Details are on my website at http://thepolynesiantattoo.com/schedule.htm

If you are a new client, the FAQ link on my website has quite a bit of info on the process-it may help to read it over:  http://thepolynesiantattoo.com/schedule.htm

You can also call me at  (808) 734-8677 or you can e-mail tattoo@lava.net but I talk FAR faster than I type so prefer the phone whenever possible.

Aloha,
Tricia
