Island Ink, Tattoo Traditions of the Pacific, a new exhibition on both customary and contemporary Pacific tattoo, will open at the Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum in Long Beach on Saturday, August 25th running through June 30th 2019.

Opening Reception: Friday, August 24th, 6-9pm.  Free to the public.  Please RSVP by phoning 562-216-4170.

Two lectures are scheduled in conjunction with the opening of the exhibition:

Sunday Aug. 26th 6-8pm, Tattoo Traditions of the Pacific focuses on historic tattoo practices of Pacific Islanders. The design meanings, rituals and protocols that accompanied the application will be discussed in this heavily illustrated presentation.

Sunday Sept. 2nd 6-8pm, The Tattoo Revival in Oceania is an in-depth look at tattooing today in the islands. We'll discuss how and when the revitalization started, the key practitioners, and address the issue of cultural appropriation -what is appropriate for non-indigenous peoples? Why are certain tattoos offensive? This seminar is also heavily illustrated with stunning imagery.

Museum admission:  $5.00 adults, $3.00 students and children, free for museum members.

Admission to the lectures: $8.00, free for museum members.

For more information, see www.PIEAM.org (although we haven't updated the website quite yet) or call 562-216-4170.

There's been quite a bit on social media lately on the Maori women's moko kauae or chin tattoo, particularly in regards to cultural appropriation.  A YouTube video illustrates another inappropriate practice very few are aware of.  It was common in the late 19th century to alter images, painting on the negative to increase the sales of early picture  postcards.  This was particularly prevalent in postcards showing Maori wearing moko.  See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTVEBz0ipfM  Many of these women were actually tattooed, but a number of these are fakes. Can you tell which ones?  Some are VERY well done!  If you are interested in looking into this further, Virginia Lee Web published a fascinating paper on the topic.

Ta Moko practitioner and artist extraordinaire, Paitangi Ostick, is featured on a video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAQpn-rQXL0

An interesting documentary on the Maori Land Wars in commemoration of the 25 year anniversary is online at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjiK-NYOAEU
