Tattoo News - Jan/Feb 2024

Mahalo nui for subscribing to my newsletter. I appreciate you all and hope that
everyone had a fantastic holiday and great start to the new year!

ONLINE

Every two years there is a fantastic festival of Marquesan culture and arts.
It was recently held on the island of Nuku Hiva. There's a good description of
the event at

https://farandawayadventures.com/aranui-5/aranui-5-itinerary/marquesas-art-culture-festival/

You'll find a number of videos of the Marquesas on YouTube but very little from
the recent festival.  Maybe no one has edited their footage yet! You can
see Marquesan dance online though:

This took place on an ancient
tohua or platform much like the heiau of Hawi'i.  Also see

, and this video will give you a
good look at the island itself:

Speaking of festivals, the Festival of Pacific Arts will be here on O'ahu in
June.  This is a major event with participants coming from all over the
Pacific. Usually it is held every four years in a different Pacific nation but
it was delayed in 2000 due to the COVID pandemic.  This is the first time
it will be hosted by Hawai'i.

Recently I was part of an online forum where I met two wonderful young men
who are both doing a great job of documenting the tattoo traditions of several
tribal groups in India. They are also both hand-poking tattoos and helping in
maintaining/reviving these traditions.  You can follow them on Instagram:
Shomil Shah  @Shomil_Poke and Amir Arjel @BlueBloodTreeRattoo and
@BlueBloodHandPoke. Check out their work!  I'm on Instagram as
TriciasPacificArt.

Have you heard any of the Inking of Immunity podcasts?  They cover a
wide variety of tattoo related topics. You can listen on SoundCloud or on Apple
Podcasts:

https://soundcloud.com/inkingofimmunity/tricia-allen-anthropologist-researcher-tattooist

or

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/inking-of-immunity/id1549977676

You'll probably notice that my interview there was posted 8 months ago. The
staff  and coordinators of the podcasts took a bit of a break but GOOD
NEWS!  It's coming back but being rebranded under the name Tattooing and
Human Nature. There will be several Island artists featured!  Watch for it
in my next newsletter.

Since I've been talking to several of you about visiting Aotearoa (New
Zealand), I'll focus a little here on Maori moko or traditional Maori tattoo.

This is a good introductory article:

The Journal of the Polynesian Society (JPS) is a great source If you have an
interest in Pacific history & culture. It is a peer-reviewed academic journal
that often has some outstanding papers on Polynesian art & culture, including
tattoo.  The current issue is accessible online at

https://thepolynesiansociety.org/jps/index.php/JPS/issue/view/50

Try searching for Moko or tattoo in the search option in the upper right corner.

Pacific Beat, a program aired on Radio Australia, often has interesting
stories some of which are tattoo related,

and

E-Tangata, a Maori news source, has some interesting articles at

https://e-tangata.co.nz/category/arts/
There are quite a few on the arts!
