Tattoo News - December 2008

ON THE WEB

Francis Tekatoha's website is http://www.AvaikiTatauArt.com on the tattoo traditions of Rennell & Bellona, Polynesian outliers located within the Solomon Islands. The situation here is quite different than elsewhere in Polynesia, as traditional tattooing was practiced until very recently so the knowledge base is fairly intact. Practitioners today have been able to revive the chant, dance, accompanying rituals with a good deal of accuracy and authenticity.

As most of you know, I just returned from Tattoonesia on Tahiti. Check out my photo gallery at : http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=61750&l=a734a&id=567016930

Also see http://www.tahititatou.com and http://tattoonesia.blogspot.com watch the video clips here as well.

Some good photos of contemporary Tahitian tattoo can be found at http://www.manaotattoo.com/#/artistsartistes/4522676597 (check each artist's link), and Roonui's site is at http://www.roonui-tattoo.com/ If you read French, check out http://www.pacifictatau.com A brief article on Tahitian tattoo is at http://www.tattoos.com/allen/TATAU.htm

If you are seriously interested in the ancient practice, there is an excellent paper with a number of previously unpublished original illustrations of Tahitian tattoo by Anne D'Alleva, in the 2005 publication, TATTOO: Bodies, Art, and Exchange in the Pacific and the West, edited by Nicholas Thomas, Anna Cole and Bronwen Douglas. It is available for purchase on Amazon.com for about $23.00 & is well worth having. See http://www.amazon.com/Tattoo-Exchange-Pacific-History-Tatooing/dp/082233562X For a brief preview, the abstracts are online at http://www.vuw.ac.nz/tatau/abstracts.htm

Maarten Hesselt , author of several books on traditional tattoo has a great website at http://www.mundurucu.com/
An excellent article summarizing the need for changes in our state health tattoo regulations is online at http://www.aroundhawaii.com/lifestyle/art_and_leisure/2008-08-updating-hawaiis-tattoo-regulations.htm l Also see http://www.khnl.com/Global/story.asp?S=8631683 An article on the native Hawaiian practice is at http://www.westhawaiitoday.com/articles/2008/02/21/local/local04.txt

TRICIA'S SCHEDULE

Nov 15 - 26th home on O'ahu
Nov 28th - Dec 10th Redondo Beach (LA area)
Dec 12h - on home on O'ahu through early next year

I was scheduled to be in San Francisco this next CA trip, however there are not enough folks signed up or committed to appointments to justify a SF trip right now, whereas there are PLENTY in LA. Hence the change. If you are interested in an appointment, please call me at 808-734-8677, or e-mail tattoo@lava.net when I am HOME (see above dates). While in CA I can be reached at (510) 802-2155. E-mail is NOT my best means of communication when I am traveling. Details on signing up are on the web at http://tattootraditions.alohaworld.com/schedule.htm
If you are signed up for this upcoming LA trip and want to schedule, please do give me a call. I am in the process of trying to reach you all by phone. I will be back in the SF area in the spring of '09.

Aloha!
Tricia
