Tattoo News - May 2008

ON THE WEB

My dear friends Tihoti (George) and Pauline on Huahine have a couple of great websites on Tihoti's tattooing, and their great boutique items. See http://web.mac.com/tihotitatau/iWeb and http://www.myspace.com/tihotitatau
Pauline has also recently published a new book on Tahitian baby names:
http://www.anaanapublishing.com They do ship to the US and accept PayPal..

Maori tattooist, Ben Te Hau has his work listed on a new website, see http://www.tatudharma.com/bentattoo.html# Oddly enough, Ed Hardy's Tattoo City in San Francisco on the LINKS page. If you are looking for color or representational work, or even a cover-up in the SF area, this is perhaps the best shop for it: http://www.tattoocitysf.com/

ON TELEVISION

Na Kamalei: The Men of Hula will air nationally on Independent Lens, a PBS program. The program features Kumu Hula (master hula teacher) Robert Cazimero and his all-male hula group as they prepare to compete in the world's largest hula festival. The national broadcast of Na Kamalei on the Independent Lens series is May 6, 2008 on PBS at 10pm. Check your local listings or visit www.pbs.org/independentlens for more information.

HAWAII TATTOO LEGISLATION

You might have heard, there's been some very controversial bills in our legislature this year regarding tattoo regulations. It's written up in these articles:
http://starbulletin.com/2008/04/08/news/story09.html
http://www.khon2.com/news/local/17375809.html and http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080408/NEWS02/804080349/1006/NEWS02
In short, the majority of tattooists in Hawai'i WANT regulations to keep the clients safe, and to protect against self-taught "scratchers" practicing without adequate knowledge of blood borne pathogens. We hope to have some say in a future bill that will update our regulations, which were written in 1981.

FESTIVALS

The annual Polynesian Festival & Luau, sponsored by the Hawaiian Surf Club of San Onofre, will be May 24th at the San Clemente Community Center. The event is free and features a number of arts and crafts booths. I'll have a booth there with my surfer buddy Jason, who will hopefully be displaying my first art-on-a-board. Check out Jason's custom shaped boards at http://www.jonesbrand.com/index.html
