Tattoo News - March 2008 Update

As some of you may know, each time I’m in Calif. I drive from San Diego to San Francisco (or visa-versa), and often stop to see dear friends in Los Osos that are affiliated with the Easter Island Foundation. As usual, I had a wonderful visit, and got to see the Foundation’s new office, and look through their various publications, including those on the SALE shelf! There are a few of their books that might be of great interest to the Polynesian tattoo community. The website for books is http://www.islandheritage.org/eifpubs.html Scroll to the bottom for rare, one of a kind, and sale (slightly damaged)
books.

My recommendations: Caroline Klarr’s book on Hula & Body Ornamentation for anyone interested in early reports on hula. Spirit of Place: Petroglyphs of Hawai’i is one of the best books on Hawaiian rock art. Both the above are avail. in limited quantities-- see the SALE section at the bottom for $12 & $15 respectively. Easter Island, Earth Island is one of my favorites for a good, historical overview of the island including the prehistory (in the one of a kind section, a deal at $40). Artistic Heritage in a Changing Pacific, is not easy to find & is listed at $29.00. For those of you solely interested in tattoo, the proceedings of their Albuquerque and Hawaii conferences have at least one paper on Polynesian tattoo. Call me during the month of April, at home, and I can give you titles & details, or e-mail the Easter Island Foundation from their website.

ON O’AHU
I’ll be giving a lecture, A Tattoo Tour of Polynesia on Monday, March 31st at 4:30 pm at Windward Community College, Hale Akoakoa 105. The event is organized by The Common Book Program, and co-sponsored by Women's History Month. The event is free and open to the public. For more Information,

REMINDER
Every 4 years the South Pacific Commission coordinates an arts festival that is beyond compare. Each time the festival is held in a different Pacific country. In 2008 the festival will be held in American Samoa from July 20th - August 2nd. It truly is an incredible experience! http://pacartsas.com/festival/history.htm Photos of the 2000 festival are online at http://www.netaxs.com/~trance/festival.html
