Tattoo News - August/September 2015

EVENTS

LA RESIDENTS:  I'm curating an exhibition, MARKS OF THE ANCESTORS:  TATTOO TRADITIONS OF THE PACIFIC at the Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum (PIEAM) in Long Beach.  The exhibition is opening Oct 16th for VIPs, contributors and museum members. The general opening and reception will be on Oct 17th.  On Oct. 23rd I'll be giving a presentation at the museum. Mark your calendars! Other guest lectures, visiting speakers and artists from the Pacific and a film series will be announced on the PIEAM website: http://www.pieam.org/  and the EVENTS link on my website for updates.

ONLINE

There's a well written article by Denby Fawcett about the revival of Tahitian tattooing, particularly Tihoti Barff online in Hawaii's Civil Beat. Go to

A heart-wrenching story of a Maori man who signed away his moko, not being fully informed of the terms & extend of possible usage.  See http://www.3news.co.nz/tvshows/campbelllive/moko-model-disputes-image-rights-2011120516#axzz3Y1pakf7r  BTW, can anyone out there do a video capture of this?  I use it in teaching & am concerned that it won't be archived on their website indefinitely. It is for classroom, educational usage only. I do respect copyright.

If you are interested in intellectual property rights, appropriation and such, there's a good website worth following. Take a look at http://www.sfu.ca/ipinch/ and browse a bit!

TATTOO-INSPIRED JEWELRY

I have a good stock of the tattoo-inspired women's jewelry in a variety of new styles. Prices range from $16 to $30 so it's quite affordable. I've also got a new line of handwoven bracelets from Colombia and it's amazing how similar the designs are to designs of the Pacific.  It's near impossible for me to process mail-orders while traveling (I will be doing mail orders in early Dec for Christmas shopping), but stop by & see me in Cali! If you are near San Luis Obispo come to the Aloha Coffee Fest, or in the LA area, stop by the Museum!

To new clients: please check out the schedule link on my website and the FAQ. There's a good bit of info there on signing up & the designing/planning process.  And then contact me.  I talk far faster than I type so the phone is good!  Typically I can be reached weekends anytime, or weekdays after 4:30PM (HI time).  Ideally we want to get you signed up by Sept 1st.

Aloha,
Tricia
