Tattoo News - April/May 2015

I apologize!  It's been a few months since I've had the time to do a newsletter.  As you might know, I'm teaching part-time as an adjunct at two of our university of Hawai'I campuses, so it keeps me busy either preparing lectures & grading, or driving back & forth in between classes.  Finally the semester is near it's conclusion & I'm getting ready to head back to the mainland and start tattooing there again.

MISCELLANEOUS

The International Folk Arts Festival is fast approaching.  It's in Santa Fe, NM in early July and is an event I've always wanted to attend.  It looks like I'll make it this year!  See http://www.folkartalliance.org/markets/santa-fe/ I'll be visiting Denver briefly beforehand, and staying 4-5 days afterward and am looking forward to seeing all my Denver friends!  If you are in Denver & interested in getting inked, e-mail me quickly so I can make appropriate plans. I have to see if there's sufficient interest to justify bringing the equipment.

There's a nice documentary online about a great event called Pasifika held annually in the Auckland area. This year's even was highlighted by Tagata Pasifika (Aotearoa TV broadcast) at  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdHb0rD7_TQ  You'll also see a bit of the Auckland news broadcast, including the devastating news of the damage by Cyclone Pam.

Another Tagata Pasifika broadcast focusing on the Auckland festival worth watching is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5Sqohb1P8w  It's their “Greatest Hits” broadcast from 2012.

The Maori movie Dead Lands is being included in many film festivals around the world.  You can find a trailer at or watch a documentary on Hawaiian fighting and warfare at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1n1hEs9pfI

If you plan to visit Hawai'i, consider joining the Hawai'i Museum Association and you'll get free admission to almost every museum in the state, including the zoo & aquarium! .  For out-of-state addresses, the membership fee for an individual is only $25.  Or $20 for students.  A true bargain!  Sign upwell ahead of time, as they tend to be slow in processing new memberships (it's an all-volunteer organization) and mailing out cards. https://www.hawaiimuseums.org/join/#account/join

There's a nice teaser for a new video on contemporary Tahitian tattoo, Tatau.  See https://vimeo.com/111675964 I have no idea when the film will be released, but If I hear anything more, I'll include it in a future newsletter.

I had included this link in a newsletter several years ago, but there's a number of new subscribers so I'll post it again.  This is a very nice brief article on the women's tattoos from North Africa. See http://www.ipernity.com/blog/246699/409816
